Martyn's Law
What is Martyn’s Law?
Martyn’s Law, formally known as the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, has been introduced to improve public safety and preparedness in the event of a terrorist incident. The legislation is designed to ensure that publicly accessible locations have appropriate plans, procedures, and protective measures in place.
The law is named in memory of Martyn Hett, one of the victims of the Manchester Arena attack in 2017, and aims to improve awareness, preparedness, and response across a wide range of venues and public settings.
How Could This Affect the Education Sector?
Educational facilities are likely to be among the many environments reviewing their emergency procedures and communication systems. While traditional fire alarm systems remain essential for life safety and evacuation, there is growing recognition that different emergency situations may require different responses.
In some scenarios, a full fire evacuation may not be the safest course of action. Education providers are increasingly considering how they can deliver separate, clearly identifiable alerts for incidents such as lockdowns or security threats.
Having dedicated alert systems can help reduce confusion and support a more controlled response during critical situations.
Blue Call Points and Separate Alert Systems
One effective solution is the installation of blue emergency call points and visual beacons integrated with the existing fire alarm infrastructure.
These systems can be configured to provide a distinct lockdown or security alert that is separate from the standard fire evacuation signal. This allows staff and occupants to quickly recognise the nature of the incident and follow the appropriate emergency procedure.
Our solutions can include
-
Blue emergency call points for lockdown activation
-
Dedicated visual beacons and audible alert tones
-
Integration with existing fire alarm panels
-
Zoned or site-wide activation options
-
Customised programming to suit individual site requirements
By integrating these systems with your current fire alarm panel, schools and colleges can benefit from a streamlined, reliable solution without requiring a completely separate infrastructure.
